American Varietal (US Population, by County, 1790-2000) 2009
Encapsulated prints, 50 10' lights, electronics, five tons structural steel
10' 6" x 40' 6" x 5'.
Commissioned for the new US Census Bureau headquarters, this large, permanent, site-specific project is a “data-mural” where all form and color is derived from US state and county population information, 1790-2000.
As the transformation of numbers into visuals is a tricky thing, the main question arising is, "How does one find a balance between truth-in-data and the pure joy of form?" Our solution is a clinically plotted 3-dimensional "graph" whose prime purpose is a counterintuitive aestheticizing of information.
